Elizabeth & Districts Modified Rules
for Age Groups Under 6, 7, 8 & 9

General Rules

  • The Under 6, 7 & 8 age groups will play on the Mini Pitch.
  • Under 9's play on a full size pitch.
  • All age groups will play NON COMPETITIVE soccer
  • Modified Rules will apply in Under 6, 7, 8 & 9 age groups only except the Challenge Cup
    which will include the Under 9's only.
  • Corner flags will be compulsory to assist Referees.
  • Under 6, 7's & 8's will use a size 3 ball.
  • Under 9's will use a size 4 ball.
  • Except where stated below the normal rules of soccer will apply.
  • All age groups will be allowed their coach on the pitch with them.
  • The emphasis of all games will be player enjoyment and quiet instruction
    NOT winning.

   Pitch    65 - 70 meters x 37 - 40 meters
   Goals    1.8 meters x 5.4 meters
   Penalty Area    10.5 meters out from the goal line by 26 meters wide.

Number of Players and Duration of Game for Under 6, 7 & 8

   Duration of Game    Under 6 & 7 - 20 minutes each half with 5 minutes half time
   Duration of Game    Under 8 - 20 minute each half with 5 minutes half time
   Number of Players    8 including goalkeeper - with a maximum of 4 interchange players

Rules for Under 6, 7 & 8 Games

  • All games will be conducted on friendly basis with no points or cup competitions.
  • Goal kicks will be taken from any point on the line marking the front of the penalty area
    and closest to where the ball is retrieved.
  • Corner kicks.
    • Under 8, to be taken from the corner quadrant on the appropriate side.
    • Under 6 & 7, to be taken from the junction of the penalty area and the goal line on
      the appropriate side.
  • There will be NO PENALTY KICKS.
  • OFFSIDE LAW WILL only APPLY between the goal line and a line drawn parallel to it
    across the full width of the pitch along the front of the penalty area.
  • Free Kicks.
    • All INDIRECT free kicks awarded inside the penalty area will be taken with the ball
      placed on the line drawn across the full width of the pitch along the font of the
      penalty area at a point nearest to where the offence occurred.
    • Penalty kicks will be replaced by a DIRECT free kick taken as above with the ball
      placed IN THE CENTER of the above mentioned line, but the defending team may defend
      their goal providing all players are at least 5 meters from the ball.
    • A player marking or obstructing the opposing goalkeeper will be penalized by an
      INDIRECT free kick taken from the point on the above mentioned line nearest to
      where the offence occurred.
    • When any free kicks are being taken, all players from the offending team must be
      at least 5 meter from the ball.
  • Players may be interchanged with any of the substitutes.
  • For interchange to take place all the following criteria must be met:
    • At any time the ball is out of play.
    • Subject to notification to the Referee of your intention to interchange, and then
      only with the Referees approval.
    • Any player taken off may return to the game at any time later subject to the above
      conditions.
    • It is compulsory that interchange only take place at the halfway line.
  • Coach may be on the field with the players for the purpose of instruction.
  • Coaching will be done in a quiet and non-hysterical manner.
  • The coach must not enter the penalty area whilst the ball is in play.
  • Goalkeepers will be subject to the normal FIFA rules accept that they can take up
    to double the time (12 seconds) to release the ball back into play. It is recommended
    that all keepers carry the ball to the edge of the penalty area before kicking or
    throwing it back into play.
  • All players listed on the match card will play at least half a game in total time
    during each game played.

Rules for Under 9 Games

  • All games will be played on a full size pitch with normal size goals and normal field markings.
  • Games will be of forty- (40) minutes duration comprising two (2) twenty (20) minute
    halves with a five- (5) minute half time.
  • Size 4 balls will be used.
  • Teams will consist of eleven (11) players including a goalkeeper with four (4)
    substitutes who are interchangeable at any time during the game.
  • Interchanges will take place at the half way line when the ball is out of play
    and subject to notification to the Referee of your intention to interchange, and then
    only with the Referees approval.
  • All games will be conducted on a friendly basis with no points or League Tables,
    however all teams will compete in the Challenge Cup Competitions.
  • All other normal FIFA soccer rules apply.
  • All players listed on the match card will play at least half a game in total playing
    time during each game with the exception of the Challenge cup when it will be left
    to the coaches discretion.
  • The coach may coach on the pitch.
  • The coach must not enter the penalty area whilst the ball is in play.
  • All coaching shall be done in a quiet non-hysterical manner.
  • Coaches are not allowed on the pitch during Cup Finals.

Modified Rules Coach

  • The minimum coaching qualification for modified rules team coaches will be the current
    EDJSA Level 0 Coaching Course.
  • All coaches must be qualified.
  • Coaches are allowed on the field to give instructions to players.

  • Coaching must be done in a non-hysterical manner.
  • Coaches are not allowed in the penalty area whilst the ball is in play.
  • The emphasis of modified rule is players having fun and enjoying themselves
    not winning games.

Modified Rules Referees and Clubs

  • The minimum qualification to Referee a modified rules game will be the current EDJSA
    Modified Rules Referees Course.
  • Each club must provide a minimum of either
    • one (1) qualified referee for each three (3) registered modified rules teams

    • or
    • one (1) qualified referee in every registered team.
  • In all instances the club must ensure that a QUALIFIED Modified Rules referee is
    available for each and every home game.
